April 21, 2009

Vice President Maggie Pilotte called the meeting to order at 10:05 a.m. Art Razo was unable attend due to jury duty.

President’s Message: Maggie welcomed everyone, and thanked Coletha and the Refreshments Committee for the great food.  She presented certificates of appreciation to Mike Saffell, President of the Murrieta Lions Club, in recognition of the Lions’ donation of $500 to the Friends of the Murrieta Library. There was a request from the membership that the minutes of the meeting be posted at the bookstores, which was past practice.

Minutes of prior meeting:   The minutes were approved as corrected.

Library Update:  Elise Malkowski reported on a Plaque of Honor awarded to the Murrieta Public Library as one of the top projects by Construction Communications Real Estate & Construction Review.  The library is featured in an article in the Review.

She thanked the Friends for their support for the baby sitter’s course, which was so popular there was a waiting list.

The library needs volunteers for shelving books, or pulling books to send out.  They continue to be extremely busy.

Membership: Sandra Lucas: No report.

Programs:  Maggie Pilotte/Judy Bain:  The list of programs have been published in the Friends newsletter, and there are no changes.

Corner Bookstore: Nancy Dixon:

$4,206 gross

$3,155 expenses

$1,051 net

Nancy reported on the FOML Board approval to proceed with the proposed expansion of the Corner Bookstore into the space immediately adjacent to the current bookstore.  Currently, the space is still occupied by the County, and is not available to visit.  The landlord will remodel the space, creating an opening between the two areas.

Nancy estimates that 30 additional units of shelving will be needed, and plans another “adopt a bookcase” program.  For $75 to $100, donors will have a plaque on the bookcase they sponsor.  Other items like bookends are also needed, and Nancy will create a wish list.  She will also have a signup sheet for volunteers to help move.  This time, the books do not have to be packed, just moved.

Town Square Bookstore: Maggie Pilotte:

$3,658 gross

$38.86 expenses

$3619.39 net

Old Business:

Carol Van Dorn reported that this was the 62nd annual Firemen’s Barbecue. The Friend’s booth was a success, and provided an opportunity for outreach and meeting people who didn’t know about the Murrieta Public Library or the Friends bookstore.  Eight volunteers made $142.00 in five hours, and sold two Murrieta books for an additional $40.00, for a total of $182.00.

Carol noted that they need a pool of volunteers to help with the various special events, and there is a signup sheet.

Maggie gave an update on the Farmer’s Market booth, which continues to do well, but is in need of more support from the membership.  It is open from 8:00 to 1:00 on Saturdays, and for the last five Saturdays made $155, $136, $148, $36, and $123, for a total of $598.  Art sets the booth up and takes it down, but more helpers are needed.

Carol Van Dorn reported on the Redlands trip, and gave Roberta Fokken credit for how well organized it was.  The bus was donated, and they stopped at the Lincoln Shrine and library.  The trip was very successful, and more are planned.

New Business: None

Comments:  Sunny Prohofsky shared that triplicates of donated books at the bookstore are sent to Camp Pendleton, and from there they are shipped to the American troops overseas.  She met a young man who was now stationed at Camp Pendleton, who told her that there is a “whole wall of them” in Iraq when he was there.  He said “it was the first time he ever read for pleasure.”

The meeting was adjourned at 10:28 a.m.

The membership enjoyed a lively program by Roland Bible.

Respectfully submitted,

Jeanne Nelson, Secretary, Friends of the Murrieta Library
